At first, his look intimidated her. He was a big guy that loved the color black, complete with piercings and tattoos. She was withdrawn from people anyway but she still liked to observed people. He surprised her by always trying to talk to her. He figured out that she was firecracker. He wore emotions on his sleeves but that was the best thing about him. He was genuine. He was kind and he wasn't afraid to show his passion. He believed in punk rock and in people. Oh, yes, he was also a pirate. So Captain Black-Beard, a rad pirate with a big heart.
She always felt comfortable around him. He was always the big teddy bear that wanted to protect the weak ones like women and children. He treated them with respect and he encouraged them to follow their unique brightness, no matter how crazy it was. What he gave was rare to find in this world, and until today, the girl have never met someone like that. He offered genuine friendship with unconditional support. Nothing else was asked. I don't know if you realize this, but it's super duper rare to find that kind of friendship. Most people would ask something from you. If you're a woman, most guys would befriend you because they find you somewhat attractive first. Not Captain Black-Beard. He looked out for the loners, for the outsiders and he befriended them. A heart so true that no matter how crazy you sounded, you felt no judgment from him, only understanding and support.
Little girl: "Sometimes I wonder if it really matters when I die."
Captain Black-Beard: "Of course it matters. You matter to me. I care. And I know other people care about that too."
Little girl: "You're so fucking nice!"
Captain Black-Beard: "Oh, I can be a mean bad-ass. People don't mess with me, But I care about people. I have lost so many and each loss leaves a big scar in my heart."
Little girl: "People change, you know. They're unreliable."
Captain Black-Beard: "Yeah, the world is fucked up. But you can count on me. I have had the same phone number for 10 years and I will continue to have that same number. So people can always contact me when they need to. You call me, any time, whenever. I don't care if it's 10 years later or at midnight, if you need to talk to someone, call me."
Little girl: "Why? Why are you like that for people?"
Captain Black-Beard: "Because people like you are nice. And I do really care."
Time flew and the little girl moved on to a different state and a different life. She got out of depression. She grew and shined with confidence. Miles apart, she always remembered his kindness and she could always call or text him when she was afraid. She promised that she would totally go with him to the pirates festival when the time came.
Sadly, the promise could never be realized. Captain Black-Beard went on and did amazing things with his life, showed the world his amazing talent of photography and changed so many lost people's lives. Then, his heart became too big and he passed peacefully to a joyous realm. His passing brought a shock that was felt throughout all the people that were fortunate to cross path with him, including the little girl. She broke down, her mind went into denial and her heart wrenching. Crying, she faced reality, darker without his light but finding peace that he no longer suffered.
The little girl was me. Maybe you wouldn't be surprised at how I grew up. I remembered all your kindness, every moment of it. I'll carry on and remember the caring passion burning bright in your eyes, and your genuine smile and your friendly voice. Captain Black-Beard, you are one of the few most beautiful souls I've ever met. Your clothes may be dark but your soul is blinding bright. Now, you can go sail your ship and brighten the heaven sea. I'll miss you on this earthy realm but I know we will meet again in the hereafter. It was my honor to know you even for a short time and it was a privilege to be your friend. Death punched a painful hole in my heart and soul that I lost a true friend on Earth. But I know you merely changed world. Don't worry about me any more, Captain Black-Beard. I'm stronger now. I'll mourn your loss but I'll fill up the hole with the beautiful memories. Go on and sail, Captain! I'll be seeing you later. Forever grateful for you, Captain Black-Beard. Thank you!
